8.5 Reasons Why Numbered Lists are Better

Bookmark and Share
Hey there everyone!!

I’ve always had a fascination with numbers.  When my massage therapist asked me to pick a number from 1 to 10 to indicate how much pressure I was feeling, I exclaimed “pi”.  She said “what?” and I replied, “I can’t get any more precise than 3.14159265359...”

But numbers do make it easy for all of us to consume new knowledge, especially in this age of information overload.  Think of the super popular books “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” or “The Four Agreements” or “21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership”.  Movies like “The Sixth Sense”, and “Seven” are more mainstream examples.

So what’s so good about numbered lists?  What do extra numbers do for us?

1. Numbered Lists Create a Sense of Consistency

Whether writing a report or conveying a story, a numbered list can make sure that our content is evenly distributed.  We want to make all of our content seem substantive, and the best way to do this, is to evenly distribute our substance through numbered lists.

2. Numbered Lists Create a Sense of Structure

Sometimes numbered lists can evolve into categories or hierarchies, or even complex flow charts.  Having at least a numbered list creates a visual map for people to digest content in easily consumable, bite-sized chunks.

3. Numbered Lists Allow People to Skim

It’s easy to get lost in a long essay.  That’s why some people don’t like reading fiction, and prefer this instructional format.  Instead of abounding an entire article should somebody get bored, they can instead easily move to the next section and consume what is relevant for them.

4. Numbered Lists Cater to All Personalities

If you are familiar with the DISC model of personality types, then numbered lists i) Allow the D’s to Decide which numbers to read, ii) Allow the I’s to Impulsively jump from number to number of their choosing, iii) Allow the S’s to Stick with the laid-out chronology, and iv) Allows the C’s to Criticize each point individual, and wonder if any points are missing.

5. Numbered Lists are Easier to Create

Rather than being overwhelmed with the depth of research or work involved with a particular message, simply start with a list.  Making a list is easy, and paints us the simple overview we often need.  Then, once we have all the major points down, it’s just a matter of filling in each point with explanation.

6. Numbered Lists have More Real & Perceived Value

Usually I start with a number like 7, but the list grows to a number like 10.  Our brains work harder thinking of new numbers to add to our lists.  And I’m sure readers appreciate the thoroughness that goes into making such lists.  Plus, numbered list just look like they have a lot more to offer.

7. Numbered Lists Invoke Intrigue

Why 7?  Why 10?  People are highly motivated by curiosity, and are more likely to read a long posting if it is numbered, simply because they want to understand the formula that we created.

8. Numbers Can Always Be Added

We may think of points to add after we have published and promoted an article like this.  No problem!  We can think of several more points, and make a part II of the article.  A simple narrative may seem disjointed in parts, but numbered lists work independently, and together.

8.5 Numbers Can Have Greater Precision

The simple technique of making .5 points or otherwise playing with numbers can be very alluring.  Entertainment giants do this all the time.  Think about the hit sitcom “Two & A Half Men” or the feature-length movie “2 Fast 2 Furious”.

Have fun with numbered lists.  You never know where they will take you.  Well, to infinity and beyond, of course!  :)

Seven Kinds of April Fools

Bookmark and Share
Hey there everyone!!

While you may or may not be the recipient of an April Fool’s practical joke, we all have been played the fool sometime in life.  The question is, what kind of fool do we play?

Here you will find the interesting distinctions of seven kinds of fools.  We may not be able to avoid playing the fool, but we can always play a better fool:

1. The Ignorant Fool

These kinds of fool don’t even realize that they are being played.  They are unaware of the trickery, and go on in their daily lives unconscious of their victimhood.  Some would argue that the central banks have played the masses for fools, by manipulating monetary policy for the benefit of only the elite.  Our ignorance of this makes us ignorant fools.

2. The Angry Fool

There are fools who get upset and mad when they realize they have been played.  They complain, blame, and judge those that played them.  It’s unfortunate, because these angry fools are the ones that give being played a bad rep.  They are sore losers, and they can’t swallow their ego for the sake of a good gag.

3. The Sorry Fool

Sad and depressed gets this type of person once they have been played.  This is where a lot of people are, especially as a victim of April Fools’ pranks.  While they may not say it, they wish they weren’t played the fool, and perhaps contemplate ways they could have avoided it.

4. The Happy Fool

Good sports are happy fools because they understand that games are meant to be fun.  Sometimes, they take it up a notch, by really getting into it – maybe even becoming a bigger “loser” on purpose to entertain giggling onlookers.

5. The Proud Fool

A proud fool realizes that there is something to be gained in everything.  They perform their role to their full capacity, uncovering lessons and bringing meaning to their captured memories.

6. The Clever Fool

A gem is discovered by the clever fool who knows that they can now become the teachers of the lessons learned.  They find opportunities to gift the new wisdom by making fools of others, and continuing this human tradition.

7. The Transformed Fool

Finding ways of making the process better, bigger, and more enjoyable for all, are traits of the transformed fool.  They take old customs and modernize them with technology and infuse them with creativity while they record it all on YouTube.  This is the next generation of practical jokers.

When adversity happens in life, what kind of fool do you usually play?  Play with the previous seven distinctions, and up your foolish playfulness.

UnSurprise Yourself!

Bookmark and Share
Hey there everyone!!

The universe has a funny way of teaching me things I don’t understand.

For example, as an ambitious teenager, I was trying to get in touch with several very high profile people and wondering why I wouldn’t even get an acknowledgement back from some.  Why can’t they simply reply back and say they are not interested?  Don’t they have enough agents/staff to do that simple task?

Fast forward many years later, and now I’m getting messages from a few people saying they are upset that I didn’t get back to them or acknowledge their communication.  I do my best, but there just isn’t enough time in the day to respond to every single person.

It’s a great lesson to learn, not to prejudge other people’s circumstances and priorities.  As Anthony Robbins teaches, don’t get frustrated -- get fascinated!

Today I was getting an awesome two-hour massage when I noticed the floor heater in the room was exactly the same brand and model of heater that I had when I was growing up!  This seemed interesting and surprising and cool.

But then I un-surprised myself and thought, “wait a minute, this company must have had thousands if not hundreds of thousands of this model made.  Of course I was bound to notice the same model somewhere, sometime.”

Even when it can be fun to be surprised, it can be very enlightening to realize why we are surprised, and maybe why we shouldn’t be?

Especially when communicating with others, let us become curious instead of shocked, and inquire instead of assume.

Unsurprise yourself today.

Three Magic Moments

Bookmark and Share
Hi there everyone!!

Right in the middle of an urban musical, I was on stage yelling, “Is this what life was meant to be, an albino who can’t see?  Why is life so f**king difficult for me?”  (I had improvised the coarse language, being so in the moment and passionate…)

I remember that moment, and can actually relive the sensations of that moment like it was yesterday.  Many years have passed, and the powerful moment stays with me, reminding me of who I am, and how far I have come.

There are probably powerful moments you remember throughout your life.  Anthony Robbins said life is about memory management, because we never really can remember everything of our past -- we simply choose certain moments to highlight and playback.  Which moments do you choose?

“That was phenomenal!!” exclaimed my friend Christina after I completed a keynote in Calgary.  The authentic passion and intonation in each of those words are so clear in my mind, and it juices me up to know how much of a difference I can make for people, and how the acknowledgement from one specific person can mean the world to me.

For each area of our lives, we can choose many moments to remember.  Here I have simply remembered moments in my speaking career to share with you, to trigger you to find your magic moments.  Pick your category, and find your moments.

At the Live Your Dreams event I co-produced, in front of 500 people, I was talking about how living our dreams is about growing, no matter where we are in life.  I get down sometimes, and then I see myself delivering this speech in my head, and realize I need to grow.

What are you three magic moments?  Take the time and relive your life the way you choose.

What About Now? Bon Jovi Lyrics

Bookmark and Share
You wanna start a fire
It only takes a spark
You gotta get behind the wheel
If you're ever gonna drive that car

If you wanna take a bite
You'd better have the teeth
If you're gonna take that step
Then get up off of your knees

'Cause tonight we're alive

Who'll stand for the restless and the lonely
For the desperate and the hungry
Time for the count, I'm hearing you now.
For the faithful, the believer,
For the faithless and the teacher.
Stand up and be proud...
What about now?

You wanna start a fight
You gotta take a swing.
You gotta get your hands in the dirt
To see what the harvest will bring.

You wanna raise your voice
Don't be scared to breathe
Don't be afraid to hurt
Don't be ashamed in need

'Cause tonight we're alive

Who'll stand for the restless and the lonely
For the desperate and the hungry
Time for the count, I'm hearing you now.
For the faithful, the believer,
For the faithless and the teacher.
Stand up and be proud...
What about now?

The leaves fall like reasons that drift through the seasons
'Til dreams are just bare dark and grey.
And all of your plans that slip right through your hands
Are just stains that you'll take to your grave.

Tonight we're alive.

Who'll stand for the restless, for the lonely
For the desperate and the hungry
Time for the count, I'm hearing you now.
For the faithful, the believer,
For the faithless and the teacher.
Stand up and be proud...
What about now?

Vision of a New App Store

Bookmark and Share
Hey there everyone!!

When I joined Amway (a network marketing company) back in 1996, I thought it was the only network marketing company there was.  It was my first exposure to a brand new concept, after all (at the age of 19).

After realizing that there were other network marketing companies with different products and services, I wondered, “why wouldn’t new products and services want to join Amway in their already established distribution, as opposed to creating a competing distribution system?”  Amway had thousands and thousands of products and services already (being around since 1959), and it seemed that they sold just about everything.

Now I understand that, while Amway (and now other network marketing companies) may distribute “just about everything”, most of their money and volume is based on their core product line (like their proprietary brands of soaps, vitamins, make-up, etc).  Other network marketing companies have created a wide variety of different compensation plans to suite their particular needs by highlighting their core products and services.  There really isn’t “one economy” inside of the network marketing concept today.

So what does all of this have to do with apps and the Vision of a New App Store?

We are creating a new economy with the network marketing concept today -- by creating a new paradigm to create, distribute, and consume mobile applications.

Up until now, nobody has successfully created a mobile app that has a network marketing compensation plan built into it.  In other words, you (yes, you, the one reading this), can now make money by promoting mobile apps.

We already created our first app, being used by over 40,000 people in our prelaunch.  And our second app is due out in several weeks.

Imagine an App Store, where you get paid!

Right now, the biggest App Stores are Apple’s App Store, Google Play, Nokia Store, Blackberry World, and Windows Phone Store.  And none of them offer apps that leverage the network marketing concept (yet).

We’ll have two apps very shortly, and more along the way.  It is possible that we could become a competing source of awesome apps, that are built by community (as opposed to traditional marketing), where people, like you, get paid.

For information on our first app, “The Inspired Living App”,  watch a short video here.
