An intimate conversation

Bookmark and Share
My life is so boring.
And my life is so exciting.
My life is full of everything.
Yet my life feels like nothing.
It is an anomaly.
It is a contradiction.
It is what I create it to be.
And it is what also happens to me.
There are infinite ways to articulate it.
There is no simple way to explain it.
My life is what it is.
My life is perfect.
Because I accept it as it is.
It is the art of balance.
Is it diversity or focus?
Let it flow.
Let it be.
Architect it.
Design it.
Love it.
Live it powerfully.
Live with passion.
Love the world together...
We are one.
And so it is.
Be here now.
The moment is everything.
But I don’t know what I don’t know.
That’s unconscionable.
Until you believe.
Welcome.
Where are you now?
You will always be here.
It takes two to tangle.
So when will it end?
Right here.
Take the baton.
It’s your move.
Go.
Fly.
Be.
See?
History is cyclical.
Evolution is inevitable.
Resistance is futile.
You are the one.

McDonald's: Is Social Media Really Social?

Bookmark and Share
McDonald’s Lie
http://youtu.be/L3AebSiebIw

Hey there everyone!!

Social proof has always been a powerful influencer of people.  For example, think about the various ads on television that show average people giving testimonies of their product use.

Because some of these are paid testimonials, while others could easily be controlled and selected, social media gave new hope to integrity and transparency of all public opinions.

But, after spending five years building a solid facebook community, I have discovered that Facebook now only allows us to reach 17% of our communities, unless we pay Facebook through sponsored (paid) advertisements.

Have you noticed that “Our Food, Your Questions” marketing campaign by McDonald’s?  It seemed like regular people were asking difficult questions of McDonald’s (like, “How is it that a McDonald’s burger does not rot?”)  Of course the answers weren’t displayed.  But their marketing worked on me, because I went to their web site to see some of their answers.

Some of the answers were really amazing.  Were movies like Food Inc., Supersize Me, and Fast Food Nation completely wrong?  Did McDonald’s completely turn around and are now totally healthy for us?  Maybe some of their answers are double-talk--created by lawyers to confuse us?

I’m not a food professional, and I can’t even fry my own egg.  So I appreciate McDonald’s and don’t claim to know what the truth is about their food.

However, I do like asking my own questions to see what is going on:

Q: “How do you decide which answers to post on this site and which questions do you decide not to answer?”

A: “We answer all the questions we get on this site...”

Wow!  Surprising, but if truthful, then amazing.

Q: “For seniors who cannot see the menu on the wall, why do you not offer a paper menu with large print?”

A: “We're excited to answer your questions about our food. Unfortunately, yours has been flagged as unanswerable under our Posting Policy...”

So, either the first question was a lie (that they answer all questions), or their lawyer is going to tell me that by saying that their statement of a question being unanswerable is in fact an answer.  ;)

To be fair, maybe the question was not relevant enough to food (even though accessibility is a huge topic these days, and “values” is a category in their posted questions/answers).  Alas, I try again.

Q: “What was/is the marketing budget for this "your questions" campaign?”

A: “We're excited to answer your questions about our food. Unfortunately, yours has been flagged as unanswerable under our Posting Policy...”

What’s going on?  It’s a shame when a company spends millions of dollars (I have to guess because they won’t tell me) to try and look transparent, when in fact, are not transparent at all.

Facebook is better than the traditional mediums of advertising, though.  There were still tons of negative remarks about McDonald’s food on their own fan page.  And wait!  They have DISABLED comments on their YouTube channel.  How sad.

Oh, ungrateful me (and transparent)

Bookmark and Share
Hi there everyone!!

After 22 years of commitment to some of my dreams, there’s a perspective I sometimes get into where I feel I haven’t even accomplished one iota of my original vision.

I know it’s all relative and I can always think about people and circumstances that are much more challenging and unfair than mine.  Yes, there are people being gang-raped, tortured with battery acid, being kept in solitary confinement for decades, or have memories of living a Holocaust.

But I don’t buy into the philosophy of trying to make myself feel better by focusing on the relative misfortunes and miseries of others.

To that end, there are only three general categories that could possibly explain my immense lack of success.

1. I’m incredibly stupid.

There are lots of people around me with less knowledge and expertise, wondering what is going on with me.  Despite my rigorous studies (and teachings), I achieve far fewer rewards (relatively) in all areas of my life (personal, business, health).  If I do what my mentors tell me to do, and I don’t achieve the results they expected of me, their position is that I am actually not doing what they are telling me to do.

2. I’m immensely unlucky.

“Keep doing what you’re doing – it will eventually happen” has been a common phrase spoken by many supporters.  Patience is a virtue, but boredom is my biggest challenge.  When I teach what I know to my audiences, apprentices, subordinates, or even competitors, it is bitter-sweet to see the tremendous growth in productivity, efficiency, and fulfillment they experience.

3. There’s a conspiracy against me.

Of course this is a paranoid paradigm which I seldom entertain, but include it for the sake of completeness.  The more I grow in the world, the more structures I uncover in business, governments, and institutions, which are designed to keep the status quo.  In a competitive marketplace, people are often abusive, taking advantage of those who have a disadvantage (like a disability).

This is not a good or fun place to be.  What can I learn from this?

The trick is to flip it upside down.

1. There’s always more to know.

I don’t know what I don’t know.  And even though I know so much, there will always be more that I don’t know.  So much can change simply from one new experience.  And, we don’t often get to use everything we know as soon as we know it.

2. I’m totally blessed.

Luck happens rarely (winning the lottery), and there are always more unlucky people (losing the lottery) than winners.  So being a “winner” is not a statistically good measure of success.  From another perspective, there are so many dangers in everyday life, that it a miracle I am still alive, surviving, and growing.

3. The universe conspires with me.

It looks like I’m stuck because that’s the game in life I’ve created for myself.  Perhaps, spiritually we chose the life struggles of our character?  Having setbacks and drive are part of the human condition, and so we simply raise our standards of success once we become successful.

This is my mind.  This is my life.  I hope it can help you discern the path of your destiny.

From Thanks-Giving to Welcome-Taking

Bookmark and Share
Hi there everyone!!

There are Thanksgiving holidays around the world at various times of the year, and now is the time in Canada!  We have all heard how important it is to have appreciation and show gratitude, but I don’t think many of us have discovered the importance of receiving thanks.

There are four distinct ways in which I have noticed that people respond to authentic gifts, compliments or acknowledgements:

1. By ignoring them.

Unfortunately some people have such a poor self-esteem that when they hear a compliment, they pretend they didn’t hear it.  And it doesn’t have to be in an audible format.  We could ignore the sight of a passing smile, or ignore the warmth of a soft touch.

When I was growing up, I sometimes heard people say “You have beautiful hair,” or “I love the color of your skin.”  I never replied because I didn’t believe it back then.

2. By denying them.

This is sometimes a knee-jerk cultural response that is conditioned in some of us.  For example, “you look beautiful” is replied with “no I don’t” or when presented with a precious gift, “oh, you shouldn’t have” is exclaimed.

In public transit I notice individuals offering their seats for others (who may have bags, children, etc.) and the offers are declined.  Why?  A gesture of kindness is just that, and doesn’t have any other meaning attached to it.

3. By reciprocating them.

“You look awesome” is instantly responded with a “You look awesome, too!”.  No silence, no feeling, no thought.  Was that latter “awesome” really authentic?  Perhaps a more common, expected reciprocation is “I love you” with “I love you, too.”

This is not necessarily a bad way for us to respond.  Reciprocating a hug with a hug, and a kiss with a kiss, are natural and beautiful ways of us humans being.

4. By welcoming them.

Sometimes it takes effort for a person to step outside their comfort zone and give a compliment.  It may require a lot of courage to say “thank you” to someone close or with difficult history.  We want to provide an open, patient, and attentive space for people to give their thanks to us.

Without a receiver, there can be no giver.  So allow others to give more freely by learning how to receive, welcome, and encourage more good things in your life.

Sharing is the art of giving without attachment, expectation, or recollection.  Share these powerful words with the people in your life.
